Peter Alliss (born 28 February 1931, died 5th December 2020) has a golfing CV that few can compete with. Whether it is a glittering amateur and professional career, being The Voice of Golf as commentator for ABC Television and BBC Television or a golf course designer across many countries, Alliss was able to sprinkle a little bit of his personality, wit and skill across the game he loved so dearly.
Alliss followed his Dad, Percy Alliss into the world of professional golf, having been a pro in mainland Europe, Percy returned to the UK where Peter started his golfing career, reaching a scratch handicap at the age of 16. Peter's first forray into professional golf was as his father's unpaid assistant at Ferndown Golf Club in Dorset.
It was while at Ferndown that he secured his initial success as a pro, winning 21 events between 1954 - 1969, including 3 British PGA Championships.
One of his crowning achievements was during a superb run of form in 1958 where he claimed all 3 national championships of Italy, Portugal and Spain in 3 consecutive weeks. Given the logistical travel issues during this time, this is a remarkable achievement with claiming the titles a real feat.
Peter's Ryder Cup career started in 1953 in a run that extended until 1969 (excluding missing the 1955 event). He and his father Percy represented, and won in 1957, becoming the first father and son pair to play in The Ryder Cup. Peter's professional career ended in 1969.
The professional game's loss was tv viewers and radio listeners gain with Alliss taking to a full time career as a broadcaster. He is considered by many to be The Voice of Golf with his fast wit, astute understanding of the game and vast experience which saw him commentate all the way up to a month before he passed away with the 2020 Masters in November. This was the first time in 54 years that Alliss hadn't attended The Masters and performed his commentating duties from his home in Churt, Surrey
Alliss enjoyed a very busy career as a golf course architect, constructing more than 50 golf courses over 3 decades. Working closely with David Thomas and Clive Clark, he was able to create a host of golf courses in Japan, France, Scotland, England, Mauritius and even The Ivory Coast.
His literary career including no less than 20 books as well as writing for a number of the national golf magazines. Whether it was Alliss playing, commentating, writing or designing, you'll be assured that he would've done so in a remarkable way m'lad.
