About Nick Faldo

Born in Hertfodshire Nick Faldo was born in Hertfordshire in 1957 but did not start playing the game of golf until the age of 14 when he watched Charles Coody, Johnny Miller and Jack Nicklaus compete for the 1971 Masters tournament on his parents' new colour television.

Just three years later he was competing in the English Amateur Championship at Woodhall Spa and in 1975 he won both the English Amateur at Royal Lytham and the British Youths Open Amateur Championship.

In 1976 he turned professional and joined the European Tour where he enjoyed instant successes finishing eighth on the Order of Merit the following year, up to third in 1978; winning one event in each season. Over the next two decades Faldo notched up 43 wins around the world, 30 on the European Tour, 9 on the PGA Tour and 6 Major titles.

Regarded by many a single minded and rather detached golfer it was a surprise to see Nick do so well in team competitions. Faldo is one of the most successful Ryder Cup players, winning 25 points and representing the European Team 11 times, playing a key role in making Europe competitive in the event.

He launched his golf architect career with Faldo Design in 1991, which has designed & remodelled courses throughout the world. One of his first layouts was Chart Hills in Kent which was a joint design with Steve Smyers from Houston, Texas. Faldo opened the course by driving two balls down the par 5 opening hole which ended up within 6 inches of each other and to this day can be seen set into the fairway in a protective case.

Faldo's game was one of exquisite ball-striking and course management, something which is evident in his course designs. Whether it is ever-popular Faldo Course at Amendoeira in The Algarve or The Faldo Course at Cornelia Golf Club, golfers wanting to score well here are ones that can shape the ball both ways and rely on strategy rather than length to play to your handicap.

Faldo Design would go on to create courses in Ireland, Portugal, China, Cyprus, Turkey, Germany, America, the Philippines, Denmark, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Australia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Egypt & Dubai.
