Thorpeness Golf Club

This Suffolk gem is heathland in style, and though not long - measuring 6,432 from the tips - is a fantastic test. Visiting golfers will be charmed as the layout winds its way through silver birch and pine, gorse and heather, in a fashion reminiscent of the world-renowned courses at Sunningdale and Woodhall Spa. The sandy soil gives Thorpeness a superb links accent, while the course's quality has been recognised with the award of a number of regional, national and international tournaments.

The charming Suffolk landscape makes for a delightful setting, while on the course itself Braid has created a great variety of holes. Some of the best are the signature 3rd, where a good drive is the key to negotiating the sharp dog-leg right, the short 7th, where a poorly-struck iron will disturb the lilies that cruise the lake, and the terrific closing hole, which demands two great shots to find the green, under the watchful gaze of the famous windmill.

Third time staying here.Rooms, standard,staff friendly. Great value, food is good. Only complaint would be that for the second year running, our tee times were pushed back both days which meant a bit of a rush on the Saturday with no explanation or apology from reception or Yourgolf

We were a group of 16. The staff were very helpful and polite . I asked for a specific breakfast which was not on the menu and they able to produce my request. The food was very good and the menu choice was welcomed by all present. My only gripe was there were cobwebs in our room. I have been tasked with organising next years visit by all 16 people,e in the group.

Course and hotel very good. However organisation a bit of a shambles. Started with a buggy issue, was booked/wasn’t booked. Wrong room keys being given. 20 people sitting in the bar for 90 mins or more, talking to reception on arrival. Then 15 mins before teeing off we get told we have too pick our evening meal at the BAR. Breakfast was just as bad as waited 20 mins then when it turned up it was lukewarm. We stayed overnight on a two day golf special and the hotel and restaurant were first class. We had a three course meal which was superb and an outstanding breakfast. The staff were friendly and attentive and really looked after us. The course is really good too and inspite of a lot of rain before our visit was dry and in great condition. The golf hotel at Thorpeness seems to convey the historic significance of the birth of golf courses in the 1920’s. Architecturally, many things have been untouched and this added to its charm. My room was clean and comfortable with a wonderful view overlooking the 3rd tee box.

The hotel is rather quaint but I’m a beautiful setting. Couldn’t fault the staff who were very helpful and friendly. Super size bedroom and the bed was extremely comfortable but the very heavy duvet could be replaced by a lighter more efficient one. The furniture in the bedrooms is very tired and scratched so could do with an update but elsewhere it adds to the comfortable ambience of a 3 star village hotel.

We had a very pleasant short golf break. Golf course was in good condition for early march. Service and food was excellent. We were 12 ladies some of the rooms were ok but my room was no 25 no window very hot so not comfortable it was ground floor with a French door which opened right near the pro shop where golfers walked by. So we could not have this open and no privacy. Would definitely go again later in the year but not in this room.

We had a lovely stay at Thorpeness Hotel with the golf - but we did think the evening meal menu was very limited. Added supplements for meat dishes, yes understandable sometimes on steaks, but also for the lamb which maybe was unnecessary. Their wasn't many meat dishes to choose from - Cajun Chicken is spicy, not everyone can eat spicy, so that left only burger or you had to pay. We had the Bear Battered fish & chips the first night, but the batter was so overcooked it was really crunchy and putting the knife in it, it just cracked off the plate. We did notice that loads of the the fish & chips were coming fast & furious, so that does show you that others were having the same problem. We would prefer to have had B & B as then we could have eaten out in many of the local pubs & restaurants, with much more varied menus. But overall value for money. Thorpeness Golf Hotel is always more expensive than others - not sure why, probably the location.

Simple twin room with TV and balcony was very nice and the shower was exceptional. The staff were very helpful however due to the amount of people eating they seemed to struggle with orders and getting this right first time. When we arrived we ordered breakfast and teas and coffees some breakfasts had come out before others had drinks, we had to ask for them. We pre ordered dinner which was fine but when the starters came out they had got us and another table mixed up so again half of us got food before the others. The sides were ordered and some cane out wrong as in chips instead of sweet potato chips. However I must say that the quality of food was exceptional and would happily eat here and stay here again! I would just say that the ordering system or the communication with the kitchen needs to be looked at. However this wouldn’t stop me going again!

Very impressed with the rooms, shared with my son. Twin beds comfortable and room size larger than expected with writing desk and large sofa to relax and read or watch tv. The room seemed very modern and bathroom of a high quality. We ate in the bar rather than the restaurant (wanted to watch England v Spain), the staff were really friendly and helpful and our food was enjoyable and well presented. Service overall was good.

My husband Alan and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day golfing break at Thorpeness Hotel & Golf Club...just what we needed!   The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful to make sure we were well looked after. As for the golf, well – the course was in great condition, not a bit of mud on our shoes or trousers after we played 18 holes; it was a pleasure to play on! We will certainly contact Your Golf Travel when we decide to go on our next golfing holiday.

Absolutely brilliant course - hadn’t realised just how much of a heathland/inland links-type course it was, so we were thrilled when we saw the sandy, baked out fairways, rugged bunkers and beautiful heather and gorse throughout the course. Very picturesque, great condition (although we struggled to hold the greens as any shots coming up marginally short would bounce right through the greens) and I imagine it’d be a super course in the winter as well. Slope rating of around 130 seems about right - got destroyed in the first round, found some redemption the second time round! We also played the nearby Forest Course at Woodbridge Golf Club on the way home, which was also brilliant (9 holes of pure bliss).

Two rounds played and two rounds enjoyed. The course is tight and it seems like you are surrounded by gorse at all times. If you hit the ball straight you'll love it. The greens were in good condition and rolled well but there are plenty of hidden breaks. The only thing that let the course down in anyway were the bunkers I hit a massive stone in one and damaged my club. This is a proper testing course of a good standard and well worth a visit to the coast.

Very happy with our two rounds, the course was drier and much more playable than those in Essex, we found the gorse a considerable challenge as once in you were rarely out. My only criticism was the directional signage on the course didn’t help navigate as much as it could.

Thorpeness is an outstanding Golf course. It is beautifully set out and a great design. Each hole demands careful thought and accurately played shots. It is dry even during a wet winter with excellent greens and well turfed fairways. The pace of play was good and staff were friendly and helpful. A fantastic venue with some great deals too.

This course is a proper test of golf!… especially in the winter with the wind blowing. Overall course was in good condition for the time of year apart from the greens which had been spiked for maintenance reasons recently.. would love to play in the summer when in top condition but value for money is fantastic and all staff were friendly and helpful.

I had two rounds on the course while I was staying at the hotel. Course was in great shape. Unfortunately it was a weekend of gales and showers! Facilities at the club are ok but could be better. Pro shop ok, locker room ok, a decent practice ground if you use your own balls. But there's no practice nets, and the putting green is too small. There is plenty of room to have both on the practice ground area.

To be fair to James Braid the design is clever, the greens are so interesting and difficult to read. Every hole is challenging, the bunkers are not big but deep with overhanging grass. They are just what the good player would expect. The sand is not too thick and is soft dark grey. A vast variety of tree species and thick tall gorse wind their way through the course. Finding your wayward golf balls is not easy, but this was one of the most enjoyable and fair golf courses I have ever played. It is truly a piece of landscape art and is a shrine to golf in a bygone era of Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen.

I've rated this course as hard simply because, in spite of its comparative short length it is well protected by gorse, bracken and heather - stray off the fairway at your peril. The greens were fantastic albeit a trifle slow for my taste, but certainly good surface and some interesting reads. All staff were helpful and the local members were a delight. Course marshal was serving drinks and snacks. All in all a great place to play golf.

Thorpeness Golf course is lovely, but you have to be straight - as there are loads of fern & gorse just waiting to eat up your golf balls. I have been to Thorpeness many times, and they seem to cleaned up a lot of the gorse now, which I must say did make it easier, but its still a challenging course, but its great.

Even though it wasn't really windy, the wind certainly playing its part and created a real challenge for the whole group ranging between hcap index of 8 thru to 21. This is a favourite golf course - fairly flat so easy to walk (if you are of a certain sort of age), absolutely beautiful with gorse lining the fairways and well maintained. The greens were velvety - looking faster than they actually were. A challenging course but not overwhelming. We'd recommend.

Practice range you have to use own balls. Course was in good condition greens were excellent. Very rough unforgiving with heavily lined with ferns ( with adders hissing) we had in our group Handicaps from 1 to 9 no one scored more than 32 stableford points. Green staff and Pros very accommodating. Overall a very tough course

The wind was fierce on both days and the course played very hard, but that’s what we love and it was an experience to some in the group who had never played that type of course before. We had rain on Sunday morning for about 4 hours before we teed off, one puddle appeared on the 4th green and by the time we came back past it on 17th it was gone. The course is in superb condition and would recommend this to anyone and everyone.

I really enjoyed this course. A great test for a mid-high handicapper with lots of well-placed bunkers and with good, fast greens. Very pleasing to the eye from the tee box, with the fairways framed by the yellow gorse. After 4 months of walking my own (very wet) course in Kent it was a pleasure to walk along dry, springy fairways.

We played as a two ball and took about 3 hours 15 minutes for each round. We were invited through by slower groups on several occasions and found other players to be courteous and friendly. The course was set up very well with an abundance of bunkers some of which I avoided. Sadly not all! The course requires a strategic approach, it's not overly long at 6,000 yards but course management is critical to score well. We were fortunate with the weather and saw the course and surrounding Vista at its best. The greens were slower than we were used to but they were very true and freewheeling staff are to be congratulated on presenting the course so well at this time of the year. We will definitively return in the future and found the two days to be really enjoyable. Thanks to Sam Greenslade for organising our break, he was very helpful and cannot speak highly enough of him and his customer service.

Great track, one that really gets you thinking! As with every course in the UK this summer, suffered a little on the fairways but you can see it growing back. Around the greens it's excellent and one of the few places you can putt confidently knowing you're getting true roll! A really well laid out test that provided a good challenge for our group. Sadly the weather got the better of us on the 2nd day and whilst the course stood up to it absolutely fine being sand based, less could be said for the wimps trying to play in it. Even with that in mind we'd 100% come back here again.
