Gainsborough Course

The par-71 Gainsborough Course measures over 7000 yards from the championship markers, and the tremendous rolling countryside is home to a truly spectacular layout, which is designed around the four expansive lakes that can wreak havoc with your scorecard.

It is essential to drive the ball well around the Gainsborough, as being out of position off the tee will make scoring exceptionally difficult. The highlight is the awe-inspiring 10th, where golfers must play their drive and approach shot over the same lake.

Constable Course

The Constable Course measuring at just over 6,400 yards and a par of 72 is similarly stunning, but is arguably tighter off the tee, owing to the mature woodland that skirts many fairways. There are several water hazards to be negotiated, and like the Gainsborough, retaining your concentration to the last is important; the closing hole is an exacting par-4, requiring a good drive over a large lake before you attack the plateau green.

Stoke by Nayland's superb golf complex also offers first-class tuition, while the overall package makes it an educated choice for your society or corporate golf outing and is now the site for one of Lee Westwood golf schools'.

The Gainsborough course offers a nice variety of holes, with some challenges for low handicaps but also a couple of gettable par 5’s. The 2nd is a particular favourite, an uphill par 5 with a risk-reward 2nd shot and plenty of room to lay up before a shot over water onto a 2-tier green.

The signature hole is the 10th, a dog-leg right with water on the right from tee and on the approach. You can be aggressive and aim up the right or aim for the wider space on the left and leave a more nerve-wracking shot in.

The bar afterwards is a great place to relax after your round, nice and lively with a spacious terrace overlooking both 18th holes.

Stoke by Nayland is set within 500 acres of Constable country, and the resort is widely regarded to be one of the most beautiful in England's East. The hotel is located amidst the stunning lakes and woodland that characterise the estate, over which many of the rooms enjoy spectacular views.

The ‘Peake Spa' is regarded as one of East Anglia's premier relaxation centres, whose 11 treatment rooms are home to speciality health and beauty therapy, including aromatherapy, reflexology, Indian head massage, manicures, pedicures, electrolysis, St. Tropez tanning, and waxing. The facility has also recently introduced Rasoul mud therapy, an exfoliation treatment inherited from the ancient Egyptians. Room looked nice with view overlooking golf course. Was woken at 3.30am with a humming noise coming from the roof space above for over 1 hour. Food very limited unless a supplement was paid, would like the steak to have been included in the £31.50 allowance. The bed was joined by zip which was broken leaving a jagged edge between the joined mattresses. Feels like they have gone to great measures to extract as much money out of you as possible, what you think you have paid for is not what you get.

The room was very hot, facing the car park & service. There was constant noise of vehicles as we had to keep the window open. Carpet in the room was threadbare, bathroom basic. No tissues, body lotion or drinking water were provided. When I complained the only comment I got was we are sorry. Talking to other ladies, they were in single occupancy with a large double bed. We were a couple & they gave us an executive room (or so they say) Disappointed that for 1 night B&B with golf we paid £350 for a room under par.

Two minor issues: 1 - 50% of the menu cam with an additional supplement, which was frustrating 2 - 1 guest had a back back so decided to have a Sauna instead of play golf on the 2nd day, but was asked to pay an additional £20 One other call out is a young lady on reception called Sophie (I think) who was so enthusiastic and welcoming. She is a credit to the hotel

1 Night stay with dinner & breakfast. Starter of prawn cocktail was not so gfood not enough sauce on it so very dry & was mainly prawn with spiralled Cucumber. The main was delicious & desert ice cream no need to say anymore. The room was nice but very warm inside luckily found a fan to cool down the room but air conditioning wouldn't be a bad idea! Pro Shop we had been told by the Operations exec that due to work being carried out that we would only be charge 50% normal price for buggies which was ok on the Sunday but for somereason on the Monday they wanted to charge some of us full price, lack of communication betweens departments! Overall everyone had a great time, on & off the course.

Comfortable and clean rooms, good staff. The food was good and quite well priced, although service was incredibly slow in the sports bar. Ended up going to the pro shop to get soft drinks as the queue was up to 15 minutes at times in the sports bar. Restaurant was good, good quality food and wine. Fantastic couple of days at the Hotel. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The Sports Bar and terrace were great for a pre-round coffee and post round/evening drinks. The food in the Lakes Restaurant was of the highest standard and was great to see high quality local produce. Best cheeseboard ever! Some of the group enjoyed the extra facilities like the gym/swimming pool and overall the whole group were happy with the stay and would certainly look to return at some point in the future, being a convenient 2hr drive from our hometown.

13 OF US STAYED AT THE HOTEL AND WE ALL REALLY ENJOYED ALL THE FACILITIES. FOOD WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN LAST YEAR AND WE WERE IN THE MAIN RESTAURANT SO WE COULD ACTUALLY HEAR OURSELVES. The Hotel was lovely and the staff were great, the bar and restaurant were very nice and the food was excellent. only down point was the Spa facilities - when we went in all the beds were either being used or had wet towels and rubbish on them so we spent a few minutes in the pool and then decided to head out and have a drink as just did not feel comfortable!! Cannot fault the service and the food, we had a lovely evening and would go back just to stop at the hotel

Room was ok, bed very comfortable, the main criticism is the food, the standard buffet was not very popular, Luke warm food not great quality, upgraded to the restaurant the second night with a £29.50 allowance ( the buffet was worth £2.50) chose chicken pie (£18) which was ok but not a “pie” but the size of a sausage roll, very disappointing for a main meal, the sweet was nice and much larger than the main course. Generally the staff were very good particularly the golf staff, the odd grumpy one in the breakfast restaurant is normal. A large very nice venue.

Although only giving a 3 star for value, it deserves more, but not quite a 4. Reason being is that on the occasion we changed restaurants to the a la carte, some items, especially the main courses seemed well over priced. The food was beautifully presented, tasted good but for value there needed to be more on the plate. Can’t fault the quality of the room, the cleanliness and the staff who were very polite and seem to general care about our needs.

The staff was really friendly and accommodating. The room was really clean and spacious with comfortable bed but unfortunately I gave a 3 on comfort only because of the noise due to a very loud wedding party under our windows. We had to call reception to check at what time the party would be over as we had an early start the next morning! The hotel should have planned for guests of the party to book rooms on our side and make sure we had a room on the other side of the corridor which was much quieter! The coffee at breakfast was very weak, tasting like coloured hot water. The toasts were dry and cold. And the breakfast was a buffet rather than table service which makes the 4 stars over-rated. I would recommend the dinner at the ‘Lake restaurant ‘ which was delicious and the selection of wine is excellent.

Hotel rooms were lovely. Volume in the restaurant was horrendous. Couldn't hear ourselves think. Cannot understand why the football was in the restaurant, can understand it being on the in bar etc, but was so loud as no carpet or curtains to absorb the sound. Food was well below par from what we have had before, portions were tiny too and very limited choice. Lunch in the sports bar, orders were slow or forgotten, that was when you found someone who could actually serve you and ordering too so long. Tables were dirty and sticky on the patio.

We experienced problems with one of our rooms. The problem was dealt with immediately. The Manager talked to us later in the day with a personal apology and compensation. All staff genuine in "getting it right". Security outstanding as a few rooms did not follow hotel rules. Very professional. Only the Gym was not fully on top of Covid requirements.

Overall the hotel was very good and the rooms comfortable. The rooms had tea and coffee available and the beds were comfortable. Shower and bathroom were nice with a good amount of hot water. Also there was an iron and board in the room which is always good to know. The service was very good in the restaurant and the bar and the staff were polite and prompt with food and drinks. The only real let down was the sports bar where the service was terrible. The staff were very aggressive with their tone about table service only and doing the track and trace system. We sat down the 1st day hoping to grab a quick bite to eat and drink before we played but we’re basically ignored for the 20 mins we waited. We eventually left without speaking to anyone or getting menus and the table was filthy. The 2nd time after our second days play we sat again and waited for a while on a dirty table until eventually I sat with my hand up for 5 mins and then called out loudly for some kind of service. Not good!!!!

Hotel was very nice albeit very busy in the bar. Rooms were big and clean, food was excellent and service was good. The golf was disappointing, the course was too busy and play was slow. Took over 4.5hrs on Sun and our last groups did not finish their rounds as the lights had gone. We needed to allow for 5hrs of light. On Monday it took around 2hrs for the first 6 holes. Not good at all, as I got a bit of flack for the organisation.

Very comfortable rooms, spacious and well lit. The group were very plaeased with the whole experience except for one minor hiccup. The roomimg list did not get to the Hotel, despite my efforts to do so on the day before we arrived. I had called the hotel to check and they had nothing and was told I had to do it through YGT. This I did and was told by YGT that I had to enter the details on the booking webpage and it would then go direct to the Hotel. As a result, on my arrival , I had to email the list from my phone to reception. Despite checking that all was in order, some of the rooms were mixed up , with a couple in a twin room instead of a double nd 2 sharing twins actually had double beds. That said, the hotel sorted it as quickly as they could. The catering was very well organised for our group and the food was very good. The Spa worked well for the non players and a good time was had by all!

Although we had an earlier tee off time once again for the second day running took over 5 hours to complete the round, unacceptable for a 2 ball. We were lucky the weather was nice otherwise we would have come off the course. Would not recommend this course unless you are happy to do a 5 hour plus round. Over all great courses shame about the extremely slow play experience.

Same as the Constable the course layout was good & some great holes on it but at a push only 70% of the greens were in good condition with not so many chunks out of them, The half way hut was a massive dissapiontment as they had no food snack of any kind according to the chap working there they has sold out the day before but for some reason not bothered to restock even though he had been there all day so why not get new supplies sent downit only takes a phone call!! little details like that leave a bad taste ion your mouth that they knew how busy the ocurse was but didn't think to ensure these bits were covered!

A good course with some really interesting holes but unfortunately that is where it ends. The greens were bismal, appreciated they had performed some maintenance on them but there were so many chunks out of the greens, you never got a smooth putt, due to either the track lines on the greens or the chunks missing, so very frustrating. The tyees hadn't been cut so many of the tee positions the grass was longer than the fiarway & in some cases standing on the tee you couldn't tell the difference between fairway & rough due to no definition to the fairway cut in. Only 5% of all the ball washers had water in them & at the apparent half way shop? there was no food or drink's available if needed.

Slowest round of golf we've ever played. Teed off at 1.24pm, leaving us 5 hours before sunset. Took us 90 minutes to play 4 holes, backed up as soon as we got onto the 2nd. Called the pro shop but never saw a marshal on the course to speed things up. Only managed to play 15 holes before it got dark, would have taken over 6 hours to play 18 holes which isn't acceptable even on a busy day at a resort course. Having spoken to some members it seems that the main focus is getting as many people through the doors. Will not be returning to either course.

The golf was good allowing for recent weather. But issue with room in that having a quick shower caused the bathroom to be flooded the design of the shower floor seems to be badly floored which meant we dare not use the shower the following morning.

Due to heavy rain the course had become very soggy, the constable course had a buggy ban so had to play the Gainsborough 3 times with the buggy path rule. Still a good test and enjoyable.

The starter provides you all you need to know. Pace of play was slower than I would like because the group in front took longer than there 3 minutes to look for balls. I purely marked the condition of the course down due to the drought the greens though were very good. Lots of big dips to play across on some holes making it play long.

Course is tough but a lot of that is down to the conditions, with the drought conditions in the UK the fairways are backed hard so never sure where the ball would end up hard fairways that undulate caused good shots to be punished on some holes. Also a lot of holes are played blind so a bit hit and hope.

The stand out course of the two for me. The four of us all play off between 14 - 19 and we all agreed it was pitched perfectly for that handicap. Great balance of challenging, yet not too punishing, with lots of interesting, varied holes. Visually, its your classic parkland course with tree lined fairways, enough water to keep you thinking but good scoring possible.

This course was a challenge, as we were carrying it felt a long walk between some of the holes. Reconstruction of the mens 12th tee box so on a temp tee box which was full of rabbit holes, health & safety would have had a field day! Overall we enjoyed the mini break.

The round was excessively slow. We started at 13.28pm, by 17.15pm we had only reached the 15th tee. We abandoned the round as we would not have been able to complete the round in daylight. A large party of ladies seemed to be the problem playing excessively slowly. There were no marshals on the course.

However the group found this course to be more interesting, with more water to work you way around and more scenic. I would like to say that the young lady that served us in the Pro Shop was extremely helpful, polite and patient. I’m sorry I didn’t get her name.

It was a better than average hotel course. The amount of traffic that the course takes is telling on the tee boxes and on some of the greens where the hole looks to have formed a ‘doughnut’, making putting a little frustrating. Straight forward with few challenging holes.

Slow round as we were behind 4 trolleys, (we were in buggy’s) - although I think they were being held up too. Buggy was awful, split seat and the foam underneath was soaking wet from the days before rain, even though we put a towel over it. We did complain but they didn’t say much, or take any money off the hire. We should have made more fuss really.

The second hole is a marvel which descends deeply into a valley then climbs steeply into a protected green . Only the very longest of hitters will get there in two . The tenth played off the whites is scenic and a challenge. Almost as enjoyable as it’s sister course you won’t be disappointed

Due to a lot of rain and constable being on 14 temporary greens we requested to play Gainsborough bot have days. Staff were very helpful and accommodated. Absolutely beautiful course. Played Green tees which made the course the right side of difficult especially as there was no run on the ball. Greens were very good despite the wet conditions. We do trips like this quite regularly and every one of the group agreed this was one of the best courses we had played and would definitely be coming back in the summer of 2021.

The golf was disappointing, the course was too busy and play was slow. Took over 4.5hrs on Sunday and our last groups did not finish their rounds as the lights had gone. We needed to have allowed for at least 5hrs of light. On Monday it took around 2hrs for the first 6 holes. There was no Marshall on the course on Monday.

Of the two courses this was the preferred course by most of the group. There is a great deal of water in play and without a planner it was not easy to work out where best to hit to or layup, until it was too late! However, the scoring on this course was much better for the group than on the Constable.
