Located on the North West coastline of the island Borneo, Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai is truly unique. It’s faultless setting allows for a truly tranquil stay, with the golf course and hotel nestled within the Bornean rainforest and the beautiful South China Sea.
The 18-hole par-72 golf course was designed by golf architect Ronald Fream and has hosted many prestigious events, most notably the Malaysian Amateur Open in 2007. The course hasn’t gone without reward either, winning the Best Resort Golf Course in Malaysia and being voted the Third Most Memorable Golf Course.

0800 043 6644This golf course might not be the longest at under 6,000 yards but in truth length means very little when the course is so outstanding; Ronald Fream has managed to design a layout that does its surroundings justice. The course is literally between a jungle rainforest and the Karambunai Beach, with the front nine playing more between the trees and the back nine opening out down towards the coast. As you get through your round you’ll soon realise that despite being short, there are plenty of hazards to ensure you are on your game with a significant amount of strategically placed bunkers and lakes. The course starts quite conservatively but by the time you reach the par-5 4th, you are already navigating around green-side bunkers to get to the green. Holes five and six both feature some gentle doglegging but the big hitters who can hit a fade will be able to take the corner out easily. At the turn, you can expect a stronger sea breeze and undulating fairways bordered by thick, unforgiving rough, in addition to constant sand and water. The 10th forces you to play over a creek not once but twice before reaching the green, which is guarded by a cluster of bunkers. All in all, the course is challenging enough for the lower handicappers but still extremely enjoyable for those who play off a higher handicap - a mesmerising round of golf awaits.
The 4.5* hotel at Nexus Resort Karambunai, like the golf course, is surrounded by breathtaking scenery with the Mount Kinabalu in the distance. Across the resort there are 236 Borneo Villas, 243 Deluxe Rooms and six Grand Royal and Presidential Villa Suites. The deluxe rooms are both spacious and elegant, all coming with a furnished balcony or terrace to enjoy the excellent views across the golf course, luscious gardens and idyllic Karambunai Beach. In-room amenities include a modern and separate bath and shower, a stocked mini bar, an LCD TV and many bathroom essentials which will make you feel comfortable and at home. The suites and villas at the resort will be more suited to groups of travelling golfers due to the added space, several bedrooms and large living area. If you wish to opt for one of the Royal Villas; located within the private gardens, the villa also comes with its very own private swimming pool, jacuzzi and landscaped garden.
There are eight dining options at the resort catering for the tastes and palates of all guests. For some local dishes, head to the Kingfisher Malaysian Restaurant while some fresh, homemade Chinese food can be enjoyed at Seoul Fairway & Grill. The Sunset Bar & Grill is a more relaxed environment to enjoy a pizza or barbecued meats while the Splashes Pool Bar is always popular with guests.
Naturally, the facilities are also second to none, perfectly complementing the golf course and accommodation. While there is a Sports and Recreation Club that boasts multiple pools, guests can also take advantage of the resort’s enviable location by experiencing boat cruises, ocean kayaking and even beach volleyball. The Borneo Spa is a true gem and is perfect for guests who want to relax and revitalise their senses with massages, oil treatments and a sauna and steam bath at the ready to get rid of any aches, pains or stresses.
