The Downfield Golf Club has hosted the 2016 Senior Open Qualifying and will be doing the same again in 2017. The course itself plays as a true Open qualifying course that tests even the single-figure handicappers with tree-lined fairways, occasional dog-legs, 7 lake holes as well as a 228 yard Par 3 so there is no let off on the length. There are 4 tee options, however, so this course is suitable for all golfing abilities.
From Whites, the course is a 6,817 yard Par 73 which features 5 par 5s so it can favour those long hitters looking for that extra birdie chance.
Downfield Golf Club is not short of achievements and accolades as the club has hosted Open Qualifying events, Senior Open Qualifying, the Scottish Open as well as the Scottish Amateur Championship. In 1999, Paul Lawrie came through the Open Qualifying at Downfield Golf Club and eventually went on to win The Open Championship at Carnoustie in a playoff that year, despite starting 10 shots behind the lead on the final day.
Downfield Golf Club is also not just a favourite amongst the Your Golf Travel Clients and Paul Lawrie, but former Ryder Cup Captain , Sam Torrance, is also a fan of the Downfield Golf Club as he rated the course in his Top 18 Golf Courses in Scotland, so this is a must-play course.
Signature Hole on the Course: 12th Hole - ‘Davy Jones’s Locker’
The Signature Hole on the Course is the Par-3 12th hole, also known as ‘Davy Jones’s Locker’. This is a suitable name for the stream which runs short of the green as many balls are likely to end up at its’ depths, especially when the hole measures at 182 yards from Whites. Aside from the stream, there are also tall trees lining either side, creating a tunnel vision like approach. It’s of no surprise that this hole is one of Gary Player’s favourite Par 3s.
Whites - 6,817 yards | Par 73
Blues - 6,547 yards | Par 72
Yellows - 6,247 yards | Par 70
Reds - 5,839 yards | Par 74
Course Record - 66 from Whites
