The 8th hole of the Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club in Dubai stands as one of the most iconic and challenging holes in golf, offering a stunning backdrop of the Dubai skyline that has made it instantly recognizable worldwide.
This par-4 is a dogleg right that demands precision and strategy from tee to green. The tee shot requires a carry of at least 240 yards from the back tees just to reach the fairway, making driver the club of choice for most players. The approach shot is sharply uphill to a sloping green, adding another layer of difficulty to this already formidable hole.
Opened in 1988 and designed by Florida-based architect Karl Litten, the Majlis – the first grass course in the Middle East – has become a firm favourite among professionals.
❝The impressiveness never, ever goes away, I'd like to hit that fairway more, but overall, it's a nice setting to stand up and hit a tee shot from.❞
Tommy Fleetwood
❝There was nothing there when I teed it up first, The only thing on the horizon was the Hard Rock Cafe. That was it.❞
Padraig Harrington
❝It is a little intimidating, I'm not going to lie.❞
Victor Perez
Playing the 8th hole requires a combination of skill, strategy, and a bit of luck. Here's how to tackle this golfing gem:
Tee Shot: Driver is recommended to reach the fairway, aim for the left side of the fairway to set up a better angle for the approach.
Second Shot: Take one club more than you initially think due to the uphill nature of the shot. Consider the pin position carefully when selecting your club and aiming point.
Mental Approach: Stay focused and avoid being distracted by the spectacular Dubai skyline view. Be prepared for a challenging hole, as it's considered one of the toughest on the course.
Additional Tips: The green slopes from back to front, so be cautious with your putting. Pay attention to the wind, which can significantly affect both the tee shot and approach.
The Majlis Course is the headline act in the UAE, boasting breathtaking views of the Dubai skyline. Strategically located on the outskirts of Dubai city, beautifully integrated into the natural desert landscape.
The design incorporates seven natural lakes that serve as water hazards, adding to the challenge for golfers. Lush fairways are lined with hundreds of indigenous plant species, creating a vibrant and picturesque environment.
The Majlis Course has a rich tournament history, hosting prestigious events like the Dubai Desert Classic and the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. Notably, the course record is held by golf legend Ernie Els, who achieved an impressive score of 61 on January 27, 1994.
Like the Swilcan Bridge on the 18th at the Old Course in St. Andrews, or the fabulous par 3 7th at Pebble Beach, the 8th hole at Majlis has become a tourist attraction in its own right.
