Whilst technically in Berkshire, Sunningdale is classed as Surrey in terms of golf as a host of the Surrey Amateur Championship and it’s members representing Surrey rather than Berkshire in amateur events. With a rich history including the likes of Harry Colt, Bobby Jones and most recently Stephen Dodd, The Old and New Golf Courses at Sunningdale are revered as some of the finest inland courses played anywhere in the world. The heathland layouts provide a stern test of golf that meanders through mature pine and oak trees that live long in the memory of any golfer fortunate to spend a day here.

While there are many stand out holes at Sunningdale, arguably it is the 10th hole on The Old which garners the most plaudits. The drive is one of the best in golf with an elevated position to a slanted fairway with bunkers ready to snare any shot left or right of the short stuff. Arguably the marquee golf club of European professional golf, Wentworth Golf Club has hosted the world’s best golfers as host of The PGA Championship and World Matchplay. Golfers playing The West Course at Wentworth are in for a test that is up there with any in the world. Measuring in excess of 7,000 yards, this heathland treat is one that is a superb driving test with a requirement for both length and accuracy required to stand a chance of playing to your handicap round here.

Designed initially by Harry Colt and further developed by Ernie Els, the course is a wonderful blend of heather and natural undulations, combined with strategically placed water hazards to snare any less than perfectly struck shots. The par-5 18th is one that provides a dramatic end to the round. The drive requires a fade round the left-to-right dogleg before being presented by a green that is protected by a stream in front of the green and bunkers long, meaning only the perfect approach stands a chance of finding the putting surface.

Hankley Common is rightly considered to be one of the finest executions of Heathland golf in the UK. Hankley Common Golf Club provides golfers of all abilities with a truly memorable experience on each hole. The course is in excess of 6,900 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 71 over the 18 holes.

Overlooking the beautiful Surrey Hills and nestling within three miles of Guildford, this superbly maintained course covers a vast expanse of heathland, providing stunning views of purple and green. A regular stop for national amateur Championships as well as Open Championship qualifying and one of the most popular mid-amateur tournaments in the UK, Hankley is a golfing treat that is consistently ranked amongst the Top 100 Golf Courses in the UK and Ireland.

Much like Sunningdale, Walton Heath boasts a world-class 36 holes of golf, however, the Old Course is clearly the headline act. This storied track played host the 1981 Ryder Cup, a disaster for the European team, but cemented the Old Course as one of the elite course in England.

Anyone in London should play the Old Course, as it is rare to find such calibre of course inside the M25.

For more than 120 years, Woking Golf Club has been known as one of the south of England finest golf courses. First opened in 1893, Woking has been enjoyed by golfing greats like American legend Bobby Jones. The large undulating greens have earned the course such accolades as being dubbed the ‘St Andrews of the South’ by both British and American writers alike.

The course has been extended in recent years to measure in excess of 6,500 yards but with heather lining the fast-running fairways any shot that is less than perfectly struck will find a hazard. The 18th is a hole that provides a bit of drama on a short par-4, whilst a perfectly hit drive up the left could find the putting surface, any shot straight or right stands a high chance of finding a rather large lake.

Located within easy reach of Guildford, Hindhead Golf Club is another of Surrey’s great examples of heathland golf. Boasting some of the best and fastest greens anywhere in the UK, a round here is one of plotting your way round to stand a chance of taming the stern par of 70. It’s history of the club includes that of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, as one of the founder members of the club.

The course meanders around the Devil’s Punchbowl and offers views towards London with the views from the 17th tee being of particular note. Stand out holes include the 2nd which Tom Doak was quoted as saying that “it is hard to convince yourself there’s a fairway down there”, the par-3 8th hole and the excellent test offered off the tee towards the sloping fairway on the 11th hole. Just moments from Hankley Common Golf Club, Hindhead offers the chance to create a superb Surrey Golf Break.

From the very first shot of the day, golfers are greeted with a wide fairway with a green rising up in the distance, the hazards are a plenty for any offline shot but they’re clear for all to see and anyone utilising their course management here is sure to be in with a chance of playing to their handicap. As with many golf courses in Surrey, St George’s Hill places itself amongst the very best inland golf courses in the country. With excellent drainage courtesy of the sand based soil, it is easy to see why so many consider this to be the best in the region.
