Nairn Golf Club

Founded by Viscount Robert Finlay, who served as Britain's Lord Chancellor in the late 1890s, the course has been revised by such greats as Old Tom Morris, Ben Sayers and James Braid. With this pedigree in mind, it is no surprise that Nairn has hosted some prestigious tournaments. All that was required to host the 1999 Walker Cup was some minor lengthening and Nairn was also chosen to host the Curtis Cup in 2012, showing that the foundations of the course are still capable of testing today's best.

Water and gorse a constant threat at Nairn Golf Club, in fact on six of the first seven holes the sea is in play. Nairn is a delightful mixture; the short holes are exceedingly tricky, while three par-5s measure over 530 yards, demanding some powerful ball-striking. You'll find firm, fast, narrow fairways here and plenty of undulation to really make you think about which club to use from the tee. Unlike some traditional golf courses, Nairn benefits from all the modern comforts of recently developed facilities.

An overhaul in the 1990s has made the clubhouse here the envy of many. This course has it all; with glorious views over the Moray Firth, it is understandable that Colin Montgomerie ranks it among his favourites.

Laid out on the banks of the Moray Firth, Nairn has always been a fantastic test of golf but with a recent facelift from Mackenzie & Ebert it is up there with best in the Highlands.

The course requires thought and skill in equal balance. 7 tough holes out, a stop at The Bothy for a well earned rest and then a veritable feast of golf holes back in. Unusually for even the finest links courses, every hole at Nairn has a view of the water. Combine it with rounds at nearby Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart and Brora, easy access through Inverness airport, and a very unscottish climate, this part of Scotland makes for an awesome trip with friends.

perfect - a course that is fairly natural and very fair, athough a high proportion of approach shots are pretty blind. superb staff in the clubhouse / pro-shop, but starter couldn't be bothered to get off his chair. Weird local rule - if you take a buggy you have to take a caddy to drive it! but Caddy was excellent (ask for Bruce)

We had 12 holes of good weather and then the final 6 holes were driving rain and cold. We knew it was bad when we saw a number of locals walking in from all corners of the course. We stuck it out and played the full 18. Fabulous course and the soup and pints in the lovely clubhouse after were great.

Fantastic experience. Booked this course after watching the British Amateur and was not disappointed. Pro was helpful, free practice balls, fab facilities. Starter was lovely and extremely helpful. Aprés Golf was very laid back. Sat outside, in our golf gear, in the sun with a very reasonable beer and a sandwich. Definitely play here again!
