After winning the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick, Indiana over the weekend, Rory McIlroy showed once again what an incredible talent he has for golf and in a year which has been dominated by the incredible achievements of Team GB in the Olympics and Paralympics, he is doing his bit to keep golf on the sporting radar of the UK & Ireland.
Following Rory’s Tiger-esque exploits, both at the start of the 2012 season and in recent weeks, and looking ahead to this month’s Ryder Cup, we thought we would have a quick look at some of the records set by “Rors” and bring you Rory McIlroy by numbers…
-41 – The incredible cumulative score Rory McIlroy has chalked up over his last 12 rounds.
-16 – The record score set by Rory in the 2011 US Open. No other golfer had ever got lower than Tiger’s mark of -12 at Pebble Beach during any point in the tournament in the history of the US Open.
1 – Current World ranking.
2 – Position on the list of most marketable athletes in the world for 2012. Only Brazilian footballer Neymar placed higher, as McIlroy did what many people fail to do, edging out Lionel Messi and Usain Bolt. Girlfriend Caroline Wozniaki came in 13th, suggesting team ‘Wozilroy’ really is an advertisers dream!
3 – Rory is one of only three players to have won at least six times on the PGA Tour by the age of 23. He is in good company by the way, with the other two being Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
4.34 – The average number of birdies made per round by “Rors”, the best on the PGA Tour in 2012.
5 – Only five players in the history of the game have become a multiple major winner at a younger age. Only Young Tom Morris, John McDermott, Gene Sarazen and Seve Ballesteros can trump him. That means he won multiple majors before both Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
7 – The age at which he became the youngest member of Holywood Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
8 – The margin of victory enjoyed when winning the USPGA at Kiawah Island this year. The kind of lead that takes the pressure of your putting stroke…something Rory demonstrated on the back nine of the famed Ocean Course!
The Ocean Course played host to Rory McIlroy and some other guys who made up the numbers at this year’s PGA Championship. Rors won by 8…for the second time in his major championship career!
9 – Tour victories to date.
15 – The age at which Rory was a member of Europe’s winning Junior Ryder Cup team in Ohio.
25 – The percentage of holes in which McIlroy was under par in 2012, with 900 holes resulting in 217 birdies and 8 eagles, the best on tour. Next best was Webb Simpson with 23.23%.
34.84 – His back 9 scoring average in 2012, the best on tour.
39 – Percentage of British 18-24 year olds who said they were inspired to play golf for the first time because of him in the wake of his US Open victory.
40 – The distance in yards, a 2 year old Rory was able to drive a ball.
50 – Percentage of points won by Rory during the 2010 Ryder Cup out of a possible four. He and playing partner Graeme McDowell won their foursomes tie against Zach Johnson & Hunter Mahan, halved their four-ball with Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar and lost to the same pair in foursomes. He also took a half from his singles match with Cink during the showdown at Celtic Manor.
61 – The competitive course record McIlroy shot on the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush in 2005 aged just 16!
Royal Portrush is an extremely difficult golf course with danger lurking at every turn…just apparently not for a 16 year old McIlroy!
63 – The course record equalling score posted on the first day of the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews. The missed putt on the Road Hole 17th on the famous St Andrews Old Course denied him the outright course record, but his 63 was the lowest first round score ever posted in 150 years of the competition.
67 – The number of weeks girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki held the number one spot in the WTA rankings. The tennis ace has more career wins than Rory (18), but is yet to record a Grand Slam title.
68 – The score he posted in his first round at a major championship, the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie.
69.62 – His scoring average on the PGA Tour in 2012.
80 – The final round score posted in the 2011 US Masters that dropped him from top spot to a tie for 15th…via one a cabin previously never seen on TV before of course!
309.8 – Rory’s driving average in yards on tour this year. Only 5 men hit it further, with Bubba Watson unsurprisingly topping the charts at a mind boggling 315.3 yards.
Despite his small physical stature compared with the PGA Tour’s other big hitters, Rory manages to keep up with them off the tee…these videos show his powerful technique…watch for the unwinding of the hips!
409 – The yardage of his longest drive in 2012, although this only ranked in 30th, some 41 yards behind Gary Woodland’s 450 yard monster!
1989 – Year he was born.
2009 – Year of first tournament win in the Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club.
2011 – Year of first major victory in the US Open.
277, 255 – The amount in Euros won by Rory in his first year on the European Tour back in 2007…somewhat more profitable than most 18 year olds jobs!
1,250,922 – The number of followers Rory has on Twitter.
10,000,000 – The amount in Dollars that Rory was the youngest golfer ever to earn.
12,500,000 – The estimated earnings in dollars for Wozniacki.
13,000,000 – The number of pounds in prize money (not including endorsements of course!) Rory has already won, meaning that going Dutch on dinner may not be a concern for him and Caroline!
1 – The percentage of Rory’s talent I would need to significantly reduce my handicap!
