With the vast sums of money that the top professional golfers play for these days, any win on tour is a welcome one but there are some special prizes in the world of golf that make a win all the more special. While the likes of the Claret Jug, Green Jacket and Wannamaker Trophy would take pride of place on any golfer’s mantelpiece, there are some trophies in the world of golf that would make you want to just grab the winner’s cheque and run!
Here are some of the weirdest trophies in golf…
Target World Challenge (Now Chevron World Challenge)
The Chevron World Challenge is Tiger’s tournament. He hosts it each and every year in an effort to raise funds for the Tiger Woods Foundation…he wins it every now and again as well!
While it’s not an official PGA Tour event, there are world ranking points up for grabs at Tiger’s tournament, not to mention a cool $1,000,000 for the winner. I would imagine there aren’t too many people though who would have the trophy on show at their home. Something tells me Tiger had something to do with the design of the original trophy which has since been replaced with something less gift shop-like…
Castello Masters
In 2011 Sergio Garcia romped to an 11 shot victory at the Castello Masters which was held at Sergio’s home course. While we are certain that an 11 shot victory is a truly impressive feat, we are not so sure about the trophy presented to the winner.
A Mr Potato Head lookalike with a hint of Easter egg to it, I’m not sure I’d even display this in my garden let alone my living room!
Austrian Open
We’ve all seen the minuscule trophy up for grabs at The Ashes in cricket and while the trophy for the Austrian Open isn’t quite as small, it’s hardly awe-inspiring…more like something you’d expect to pick up for winning a monthly medal!
“Size isn’t everything.” “The best things come in small packages.” What a load of tosh! Give me a proper trophy!
RBC Heritage
The Green Jacket awarded to the winner of The Masters is one of the most famous prizes in sport; an understated, classy garment that is at the other end of the spectrum to the gawdy tartan number presented to winners of the RBC Heritage.
Still…wearing that jacket is a small price to pay for four rounds at Harbour Town Golf Links!
Dubai Ladies Masters
The trophy for the Dubai Ladies Masters is supposed to represent the region’s desert-dwelling Bedouin women.
I can’t help but think it looks more like a thumb…or a melting astronaut. Maybe that’s just me?!
Mayakoba Classic
The trophy presented to the winner of the Mayakoba Classic is a giant stone chameleon.
If the trophy can seemingly vanish into its environment like the animal on which it’s modelled then fine; it can have a place on my mantle piece!
Legends Reno-Tahoe Open
The trophy for the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open is supposed to represent the stunning, snow-capped mountains of the surrounding area but no matter how you dress it up, it’s still looks like a plate of rocks…which it is.
Can you think of any other dodgy trophies in the world of golf?
