Selection headaches for Fabio Capello – same old story, right? Wrong. The England gaffer was thinking “lay up or go for the green” and “6-iron or 7-iron” as he ditched an important England game in favour of a day on the golf course!
The nation’s Under-19 squad was in France competing in their age group’s European Championships, and given the paucity of the senior squad’s recent showing in South Africa, football fans would be forgiven for thinking that Capello would be keen to check out the young talent that could be called upon to shake up his collection of flops. But no, the boss was on Spain’s Costa del Sol, sunning himself at a luxury resort and finding time to have a couple of drinks.
The future of English football went down 3-1 to Spain – is there anything the Spanish won’t win in 2010? – but Capello was unfazed by that some 1,100 miles to the South. The England manager is hosting the Fabio Capello Charity Golf Day at the luxury Melia La Quinta Resort near Marbella in aid of Seve Ballesteros’ cancer foundation.
Capello’s sojourn on the Spanish coast will do little for the public’s perception of the national team and the apparent lack of hunger to succeed on the international stage, but it does confirm one thing – even the top dogs favour golf in the sun, and the Costa del Sol, with resorts like La Quinta is among the very best.
